Paraguay Shock Germany in World Cup Shoot-out

Paraguay produced a historic World Cup upset by eliminating four-time champions Germany 4-3 on penalties in the last-32 round, following a grueling 1-1 draw after extra time on Monday, 29 June.

The dramatic result marks Germany’s first-ever penalty shoot-out defeat in World Cup history.

During normal time, Julio Enciso headed Paraguay ahead before Kai Havertz equalised. Germany dominated with 75% possession and 21 shots, but manager Gustavo Alfaro’s heavily criticised, ultra-defensive tactics successfully frustrated the Europeans.

Under intense pressure, Paraguay’s backline held firm, and Germany even saw a late Jonathan Tah goal controversially disallowed by VAR for a foul.

In the shoot-out, Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill became the hero, saving two spot-kicks. Reflecting on the triumph, Gill stated: “Thank God I was able to save two penalties. This is a privilege; we eliminated a champion.”

Conversely, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann faces severe scrutiny regarding his future after a third consecutive disappointing tournament exit. “We didn’t do enough today,” Nagelsmann admitted.

While a national holiday was declared in Paraguay to celebrate, the South American underdogs must quickly refocus as they advance to the round of 16 to face either France or Sweden.
